Goodbye Comfort Zone! - 5 steps for going outside the comfort zone
It’s warm and cozy in the comfort zone, familiar and safe. Of course that’s where you want to be, our at least where your brain is telling you to stay.
But stepping out of the comfort zone is something you need to do if you want to grow or take on a new challenge.
It may sound very dramatic, but it doesn’t have to be, with the right support, plan and mindset, anyone can achieve growth!
That’s exactly what the TeQflo team did this weekend, together as a team when we drove like crazy!
We didn’t know where we were heading all we knew was that we might have to step out of our comfort zones a bit and expect some what of an adrenaline rush.
We met up at a ”Svampabanan" in ”Tomelilla” and when arriving I must admit I got a little nervous, I understood quit soon what was was awaiting when I heard the engines roaring, I was going to be in a race. With cars.
I was thinking to myself, dear god let me survive, don’t crash and don’t become a ridiculous youtube moment. By then I knew, because of my exaggerated worries, I was really stepping out of my comfort zone. That tends to happen when you’re about to do something you never done before.
Some of my fellow TeQflo team members had some more experience of driving cars fast (like growing up in Småland) but I was happy to discover that there’s no macho culture here, quit the opposite, I got a whole lot of support and felt a bit more comfortable when picking out my helmet ( a helmet indicating danger) and my jumpsuit. Changing clothes was me transferring from the comfort zone to uncomfort.
As I jumped into the beast..a beaten down Volvo, scraped of all it’s interior, I was out of the comfort zone for sure.
Roaring up the engine and hitting the gas pedal and at the same time going through all possible scenarios, flying off the track, crashing or getting stuck in the mud, was me speeding right out the comfort zone.
So how did it go? It was so much fun! Speeding around the track, spinning around the curves, what a rush!
But above all, doing it, afterwards I felt proud just by my participation. Maybe next time I raise the bar, going for a place on the podium!
Do you need a little push to step out of your comfort zone?
Here’s some hands on tips to get you started:
1. Don’t take yourself so seriously
Roll with the punches, laugh at yourself and be comfortable In knowing that setbacks and failure is an inevitable part of growth
2. Baby Steps
Break your challenge down to small achievable steps and take them on one after the other.
3. Clearify The True Challenge
When stepping out of your comfort zone it’s important to identify the fear, the uncomfort. Is it the loud noice from an engine, the speed or maybe it’s a claustrophobic feeling? No thy enemy and by doing so you know what you’re fighting and how to defeat it.
4. Be Honest
When trying you will have a inner dialogue going. One side in this dialogue will make up excuses to why it’s not a good time right now to do whatever it is you’re trying to achieve. Don’t use excuses, be honest instead, better to say that ”at the moment I’m too scared” then to make up a lie. This way you’ll increase your chances of moving forward and succeeding.
5. What’s the benefits
Visualize and always keep in mind what benefits comes with overcoming this fear or challenge. Goal setting is a great motivator while pushing through fear.
As a bonus: Having a good supportive team, friend or family member by your side is always nice, we all struggle with different things and sharing with the right people will not only help you but probably the ones you choose to share with as well.
